Breakfast

Sometimes, I feel like I glimpse into what is yet to come....

Sometimes the present is so foggy through the training, the instruction-giving, the discipline, the persistence and repetition that's needed when your kids are little. Nothing is perfect.

This morning, I listening in on a conversation between Emma and Liv, I could have closed my eyes and guess them to be "Ruth" and "Ethel", two 90 yr old elegant, graceful ladies sharing brunch together.

Emma found 1/2 a piece of peanut butter toast on the counter.

Emma: "Liv, is this your toast? Are you going to eat the rest?"

Liv: "Hmmm, probably not."

Emma: "May I eat it then, if you're not going to?"

Liv: "Sure."

Emma: "Thank you Olivia." (spoken quietly)

Liv: "You're welcome Emma." (just as quietly)

I'll remember this next time they argue and pick at each other, when the tears of toddlerhood flow, when I'm tempted to give in to their selfish nature.... I'll remember that somewhere in their hearts and minds, the training IS getting through....I am God's hand-picked example and prayer warrior for my children.

Jake and I both read this and chuckled together because here is our common scenario: Samara spies Marshall's leftover toast at the table and covertly tries to nibble on it - Marshall sees what she is up to and starts screaming "HEY! that is MY toast!" Then Samara shoves all of it in her mouth to keep it from his reach and he comes over and bops her on the head. It all goes downhill from there -to crying and ranting - oh my. We train, discipline and are broken records about what "Jesus would want us to do" and the rest is just a matter of prayer b/c we realize we've got two kids that are gonna need the Holy spirit to do what we as parents cannot!
Don't ever take your peaceful household for granted! ;-)
