Any Thoughts?

Emma has a habit that has become an almost all-the-time, necessity (to her). I've watched this progress as she's grown older, and it makes me very curious.

Emma carrys things. It can start with a blanket and a tiny stuffed animal, or it may be a pair of sunglasses...As the day goes on, it turns into 3, 4, and 5 items....Things she's collected during the day and they go everywhere with her. If we go outside to the park, she'll come back with a leaf, rock, stick etc. and those will stay in her hands the rest of the day.

When we go out to the car, she HAS to take with her what she's been carrying even though she rarely seems to play with those items (and sometimes, they are VERY random items! ie toothpick, business card etc.) but she continues to hold them. She's not being rude to us or uncooperative, but I know the last thing she wants is to let go of her "things".
It gets to the point where her hands are so full of "stuff" that she can't use the railing to walk down the stairs or carry anything I might ask her to. Whatever her "items" are for the day, they are extremely important to her, and she's concerned about losing them....They usually go to bed with her too.

I can tell this routine is very precious to her, even though I find it at times annoying. I'm just more curious as to what's happening in her brain!

Does anyone else have kids who do this, or maybe you've read about something like this?

My suggestion is get her a little purse or tote bag she can use to carry her items in. That would free up her little hands for more important tasks.
(I'm Becky's mom...love reading your blog!!)

Becky's Mom & Dawn,
(By the way, I love it that you're on our blog Becky's mom!! :))
The purse suggestion is good, she has 4, and she does use them...I'm more interested with her desperation to keep her hands full. Kids are so intriguing.
